Tips and Tricks
How do I design my hats?
Text
- Start with a basic structure
- Select a font and color
- Please note: For better results, avoid using small text on your hats (maximum of 3 lines of text on the front of your hats.)
Graphics/Images
- We are currently working on adding additional graphic options to use in your customization project. To view our current collection, visit our Design Gallery.
- If you have uploaded your own image, you can make adjustments to the size and placement through our customization tool.
Specialty Add-Ons
3D Embroidery
- Some elements in your design can be raised for a 3D effect. This works best with larger and thicker design elements.
Raised embroidery on text elements works best with bold, wide letters. Fine details and thin lettering will not meet our quality control standards for raised embroidery. - To add raised embroidery to your order, please add “3D Embroidery” in the order notes.
- As Design Professionals, we will determine if a design can or cannot be raised. In the event that no element of the design can be raised, we will notice you.
- Raised designs can only be done on the front of the hats. The side and back of hats do not have a big enough area to do raised at a high quality.
Specialty Thread
- Another feature that can highlight designs is the use of specialty threads. These do not work for everything, but they can add some enhanced features. If this is something you are interested in please add “Specialty Thread” in the comment section.
- Here are some specialty threads we offer.
Metallic (Gold, Silver, Copper, Black, Red, Royal Blue, Pink, Green, White, and Purple)
Common Issues to Avoid
- Small Text: For best results, text should be no smaller than 0.2” in height and should have a minimum thickness of 0.08”.
- Front Designs: For best results, keep front embroidery text limited to 3 lines and no more than 20 characters.
- Side/Back Designs: Space is limited for side and back embroidery. For best results, keep your designs to a maximum of 1.7” tall and 2.8” wide. It is best to keep text shorter than 10 characters per line, with a maximum of 2 lines.
- Details and Fine Lines: Fine lines and small details do not always work well with hat embroidery. Some fine lines and small details will be eliminated or made thicker to create a better product.
- Blending/Shading: Blending and shading is accomplished by placing one thread color on top of another thread color. Subtle changes and blending are difficult to achieve with embroidery thread.
- The best quality embroidery is accomplished with solid lines and colors. We do not recommend blending or shading in your customization project.
- Negative Space/Gaps/Abstract: Negative space can cause issues with embroidery designs. For best results, we recommend filling in negative space with a color that complements your design.
- Large Solid Backgrounds: If a logo covers a large area with a solid background, it can cause distortion in the hat or fabric. If this occurs with your design, our customization team will make suggestions to get the best results with your embroidery.

Must-follow Guidelines on Digitalizing
Key limitations in traditional embroidery that can distort fine details, thin lines, and complex artwork.
Text too small, lines too thin
Avoid using very small letters because the embroidered text might not be legible. Keep the text at least 0.25'' in height and at least 0.05'' thick.
The minimum recommended line thickness for the regular satin stitch is 0.05''. For thinner lines we’ll use run stitch (a single line of stitches).
You can measure the text in Illustrator either by using the measuring tool, or by converting the font point size to inches.
You can do this by going to: File > Preferences > Units > General > Inches
0.25'' is equivalent to approximately 36pt, and the letters will also have the necessary thickness. But this depends on the font.
We recommend using simple fonts like Arial, Helvetica, Myriad pro.

Distressed or Textured Graphics
With distressed or textured graphics many details might be lost during embroidery depending on the texture size. For these files, we’ll only be able to use flat embroidery, and extremely thin parts are likely to be run stitched.
Negative Space Objects
These are the empty spaces in the artwork - the hat fabric showing through the design (but don’t mix it up with transparent background, which is alright!). This can cause several problems.
Avoid these issues by filling the negative spaces with another color.

Avoid these issues by filling the negative spaces with another color.
Gradients
With standard embroidery, we can only embroider solid shapes and colors. Gradients won’t work because we can’t create smooth transitions from one color to another.
You’ll have to replace gradients with solid colors.
If you want gradients in your embroidery design, use unlimited color embroidery instead.
Solid Backgrounds
Graphics that cover a large part of the embroidery area will likely exceed the maximum stitch count of 15,000. Remove all backgrounds from your files to make sure they don't exceed this count.
If you’d like to keep the background, we’ll have to reduce the size of the graphic by up to 50%.
Photographic Images
It’s not possible to embroider photographic images as they are. Photographic images have to be recreated to include solid shapes and colors.
3D Puff Embroidery
Use bold shapes and text. Graphics that don’t meet the minimum object thickness will not be possible to embroider in 3D puff. Some fonts like calligraphy simply won’t work for 3D puff. For 3D puff embroidery, please make sure that all lines are between 0.2" and 0.5" to give a good-quality outcome.
Side Embroidery
The area for side embroidery is smaller than in the front. Include up to 10 characters per line in your text to make sure that the final result looks great.

Must-follow Guidelines on Digitalizing
Key limitations in traditional embroidery that can distort fine details, thin lines, and complex artwork.
Text too small, lines too thin
Avoid using extremely small text or ultra-thin lines in print artwork. While printing methods such asDTF Heat TransferorSilicone Printallow fine detail, very small elements may still lose clarity on fabric textures.
Recommended minimum sizes:
Minimum text height:3–4 mm
Minimum line thickness:0.3–0.5 mm
Thin lines may break or appear inconsistent after heat pressing.
For best results, usebold fonts and simplified shapeswhen designing printed logos for hats.
Recommended fonts:Arial, Helvetica, Montserrat
Gradients & Colour Transitions
Gradients are supported in DTF Heat Transfer, but extremely subtle transitions may appear slightly different after printing.
To ensure the best result:
Avoid extremely soft gradient transitions
Use clear colour separation
Keep contrast between colours
For bold brand logos, solid colours often deliver stronger visual impact.
Extremely Detailed Artwork
Highly detailed artwork may lose definition on textured fabrics such as cotton twill or polyester caps.
Very fine textures, micro patterns, or photographic elements may not reproduce perfectly.
For optimal printing quality:
Simplify complex graphics
Increase spacing between design elements
Usevector artwork whenever possible
Solid Background Designs
Large solid prints can slightly affect the flexibility and breathability of the fabric, depending on the printing method.
For better comfort and durability:
Avoid very large solid print blocks
Useopen shapes or segmented artwork
ConsiderSilicone PrintorDTF transferfor balanced flexibility.
Photographic Images
Photographic designs are best suited forDTF Heat Transfer, which supports full-colour printing.
However:
Small photographic details may become less visible on curved hat panels.
High contrast images perform better than low-contrast photos.
Always usehigh-resolution artwork (300 DPI)for the best results.
Best File Formats For Printing
For smooth production and accurate results, we recommend submitting artwork in the following formats:
Vector formats (preferred)
AI / EPS / PDF
Raster formats (minimum 300 DPI)
PNG / PSD / TIFF
Vector files ensure the cleanest edges and most accurate colour reproduction for printed hats.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great quality 5-panel hat! Comfortable fit, clean shape, and perfect for custom patches. The quality is excellent for the price. Definitely ordering more for Service & Stitch!
I thought all 3 hats were great.
I loved the colors offered.
I'm the golf coach at our school and we are looking for team hats in the spring.
This gave me a great idea of what to order when it comes time.
Thanks for your service and help with ordering.
Fit and finish were amazing on these hats. We went with black and white rope and black stitched lettering.
Always great quality and fast shipping.
Excellent service, fast delivery, great product.
Well made and priced right!!! Awesome styles!!!
This is absolutely some of the worst stitching I have ever seen. After paying well over $100, I expected quality workmanship—not the sloppy, unacceptable product I received. This level of quality control is embarrassing and completely unacceptable at this price point.
The hats I purchased had a logo from the club where I grew up in the 1970s. The club closed down in 2020, so we're having a junior golf reunion to reminisce about our youth. Formost did a great job with the logo and the hats look great.
I am very impressed with this hat! It is incredibly easy to clean—I can simply rinse the sweat off, and it looks as good as new. The performance fabric holds up perfectly. Highly recommended.
We’re so glad to hear that the performance fabric has made your hat easy to care for while keeping it looking great. Thank you for recommending it and for sharing such helpful feedback. We truly appreciate your support!
Horrible experience. Borderline scam. Hats with crooked logos, that are unwearable. Only partial refund provided. Basically, I have less money than when I started and no hats.
Love the hats!! Easy to embroider on, great structure.
Great fit and great quality!
Great hats!!! Had some made for golf tournament. They were a hit..
These worked out great. We patched them up with our event logo. Everyone loved them!
It’s a very high quality hat at an absolutely great price point. As a decorator I’m very happy to see 5 panel golf hats become so popular. These hats are a pleasure to work with. Color selection is also a huge plus.
Excellent quality hat with a great fit and modern style. The laser-perforated panels keep it cool and comfortable, while the rope detail adds a classic golf look. Lightweight, durable, and perfect for custom logos. A great choice for golf events, businesses, or everyday wear.
Love The Hats! Very Good Quality!
Specifically ordered these hats for a high school golf team. It's perfect. Structured and pretty easy to stitch on.
I just received my hat order today. PERFECT! I love your product and look forward to more of your quality in my shop. The ordering was easy, the attention to detail, and email correspondence is always very good. I am so glad I found you. It is incredible to go from order to package delivered so quickly too!
Grateful,
Mike Longacre
Great Hats, Amazing Quality, Fast Shipping, and Great Customer service.
